I’m a Senior Library Assistant with Lewisham Libraries’ Community Engagement Team and I love my job. In addition to comics and illustration workshops I am involved in many other activities for children and teens both in my day job and as a freelancer.
I was recently invited to run workshops at the Sharjah International Book Fair for six days. I had a fantastic experience working in the children’s area of this incredible and diverse event (blog post to come soon).
I’m a regular judge at Southwark Libraries’ graphic art competition which involves choosing winners and runners up for three different age categories, presenting the prizes and giving an illustration workshop at the award ceremonies in Southwark’s Culture Space (please see my post about this). I also worked with Southwark on a manga/fashion cosplay event aimed at bringing more teens to the library.
I am a trained Arts Award Adviser (see post), and have been involved in the ‘Explore’ Arts Award with Bromley and Bexley’s Chatterbooks reading groups, both in my day job and as a freelancer running illustration workshops.
I regularly judge the BBC’s 500 Words children’s story writing competition along with other library and teaching staff.
My library experience includes running school library visits, story times, Baby Bounce and Rhyme, and Teenage Reading Group. As part of the events team at Lewisham Libraries I’m working on organising programmes to tie in with events such as World Book Day, Spine Festival and Black History Month.
I ‘m passionate about reading and children’s literacy. I’ve been attending a creative writing group for a year and I’m currently working on the text and illustrations for a children’s picture book. To discuss a booking or freelance job, please contact me.
